WELLS — New business is growing along the shore of Lake Algonquin.
The Wells Edge Country Store, 1488 Route 30 in Wells, opened May 6. The convenience store and deli makes fresh sandwiches and carries variety of products including beer. Hand scooped Italian ice is also available.
The store is owned and operated by Jason Luckert and his wife, Eileen. The couple have a daughter, Dakota, 6, who can often be found doing homework or playing while her parents work.
Luckert, who is from Long Island, said he decided to make Wells home because he had spent a lot of time with his parents in the town on family vacations. His father, Bill, and some of his other family members have also moved to Wells. Bill helped Luckert get the business started, remodeling the former Zack’s Country Store and installing a wooden slab bar with hand etched designs.
“I’ve been coming up here my whole life,” Luckert said. “When I was a kid I used to go down main street and there was everything. Over the last few years it seems like businesses are closing down and moving out. So, we’re coming in and trying to revive the town. I have family here, and I’d really like to bring life back to it.”
In addition to the convenience store and deli, Luckert said he plans to offer kayak and tube rentals, as well as extended hours during the summer months.
The Wells Edge Country Store is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
