Lions Club update
To the editor:
On June 30,1925 at the 1925 Lions Clubs International Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become Knights of the Blind. The Northville/Sacandaga Lions Club took up that challenge, and became a part of Lions Clubs International on May 9, 1985.
Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest Service organization. We have 1,368,802 members in more than 46,672 clubs and 753 districts in 207 countries an ...
Rules for hunters make no sense
To the editor:
Today’s campers are looking for a place to have beer and pot parties. State campgrounds are patrolled constantly, so the state closing free camping along main roads and modernizing back road into areas zoned as wild forest, sends this sort of camper there. The state is restricting hunters and trappers from wild forests by issuing one permit a year.
I have some suggestions for the state:
1. Allow a renewable permit for one year. One year for t ...
Northville hopes for a swift return
To the editor:
As most of us know, the chimney swifts have made their way to Northville every year on May 6 to make their summer home in the old Hubbell Chimney.
Walker LaRowe was one of the first ones to discover them in the mid 1940s. A community celebration began in the early 1960s to welcome them back. Walker LaRowe would provide soda to the band members.
The NCS band would always play a few numbers, grade school art class drew pictures of their renditi ...
Northville provides the opportunities
To the editor:
My high school experience at Northville Central School provided me with many opportunities to receive college credit in the high school. Upon my graduation, I had 28 college credits which all transferred as either electives or my core classes, thus I was only two credits shy of being considered a sophomore. I appreciate having had the opportunity to take these classes both from the financial perspective and the educational opportunity. I appr ...
Thanks for helping me find Crash
To the editor:
I just recently moved from New York City to Northville. Obviously quite a bit of change has been going on, but the most important of these was reuniting with my dog, Crash, who had been living with my mom in Broadalbin during my stay in the city.
Last week during our usual morning routine, I let Crash out to go to the bathroom while I went inside to fill his food and water dishes. Crash wears an invisible fence collar so I never thought twice abou ...
Fire victim offers thanks
To the editor:
On Nov. 11, 2012 my son called me at work and I was informed our home was on fire. After my prayers were answered on my way home that my children were all fine, I was shoved into a world which I am not normally familiar with.
Aside from being homeless, which was devastating, the outpouring of support, warmth, generosity and concern was absolutely overwhelming. The homeless part wasn’t half as horrible as it would have been if it wasn’t for th ...
Lions Club has been staying busy
To the editor:
The Northville-Sacandaga Lions Club has been busy during the fall months setting up a calendar of events and organizing and running its biggest fund raiser of the year, The Great Sacandaga Road Race which was held on Saturday, Oct. 27. This annual event continues to be a big success. This year we had 99 runners ranging in age from 17 to 79. The group was comprised of 42 females and 57 males. The best time for the males in this 10K event was achiev ...
Season of giving has indeed begun
To the editor:
Hundreds of local children will have the opportunity to enjoy a local summer camp experience because of the generosity of your neighbors, friends and local businesses.
Sacandaga Bible Conference’s annual dinner auction raised nearly $17,000 to help provide an affordable Christian camping program and fund about a dozen free events throughout the year.
In addition to several anonymous donors, Sac would like to thank these individuals who dona ...
A day of pride for bridge committee
To the editor:
As opening day has arrived for the new Batchellerville Bridge, it will carry the first of ultimately millions of vehicles across Great Sacandaga Lake at Edinburg, Batchellerville Bridge Action Committee members can take pride in their contributions to the span’s final design.
The new bridge looms over its predecessor and is radically different in design — high and arched vs. low and flat. The high arches are intended to allow sailbo ...
Making the country a better place for all
To the editor:
In response to the letter sent by Dave Anderson in the Sept 27 issue concerning the Broadalbin Veterans Monument, the auxiliary members of Post 337 are responsible for the garden as you well know.
Here are a few more things, along with full time jobs, homes and families, that the auxiliary are involved in for the record.
The auxiliary yearly sponsors the K-9 walk which raised thousands of dollars to assure that the Fulton County K-9 progr ...
In defense of a son and superintendent
To the editor:
I have tried very hard to be quiet about the ongoing reports about the Broadalbin Highway Department. Last year, January 2012, my son Lance Winney took over as Highway Superintendent, replacing Donald Loveless. From the very first day, after crawling through a window to get into his filthy office, he has been through hell. The entire staff of workers and the supervisor have done everything to discourage him. They wanted Loveless back. ...
A little help for Main Street
To the editor:
An assortment of State and Federal tax credits is available for the rehabilitation and adaptive re-use of historic structures. The definition of “historic” is such that a surprisingly high percentage of buildings can qualify for these credits. Tax credits can make all the difference when considering a challenging adaptive re-use project. The empty storefronts of rural Main Streets with the equally deserted former living spaces above them ...
Agriculture needs more support
To the editor:
Speaking with numerous farmers in the region, it seems clear to me that even though agriculture has been a vital part of our region and economy it doesn’t seem to always get the attention and support it deserves. Any revitalization of the region must include agriculture, it is part of our past and must be part of our future.
New York State has a rich history of agriculture and we need to build on this. Dairy makes up most of our farms b ...
Bake sale planned for Anna
To the editor:
On behalf of the members of the Northville Falcon Helpers 4-H Club, I would like to invite people to help us help Anna King. We are hosting a bake sale fund-raiser at the Northville Famers’ Market Friday, Oct. 5, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Village Waterfront Park, behind the Main Street businesses.
Our members will be baking some delightful treats to sell and all proceeds will go to Anna King. Anna is a native of Mayfield and currently lives in The ...
Vets’ monument is being neglected
To the editor:
Whoever is responsible for the care and upkeep of the veterans monument in the center of Main Street in Broadalbin should be absolutely ashamed of how they disgraced a monument dedicated to the veterans who have served, fought and died for this country.
The monument was erected by the members of the Grand Army Republic in the early 1900s and has since been cared for and recently refurbished at the cost of approximately $19,000 and beautiful ...
Get all the info on the merger
To the editor:
To all residents of the Mayfield and Northville school districts, please get all the information on this merger before you vote.
I would like to draw your attention to page 195 of the study states that all bargaining units will get together and try to come to an agreement on salary and benefits before a vote is taken. If the Northville Teachers Association’s contract is raised to equal the Mayfield Teachers Association contract, that al ...
Shakespeare in Caroga Lake
To the editor:
Kudos to Trish and John Isabella for bringing the Adirondack Shakespeare Company all the way from Schroon Lake to perform their rousing version of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” at the former Jammer/Red Barn in Caroga Lake on Sunday afternoon, July 29th.
We enjoyed the outdoor staging that allowed the actors to move through the audience as they traversed the natural outdoor stage voicing their Elizabethan lines as if they were born to s ...
Thanks for visiting show
To the editor:
I would like to thank everyone who over the past six years came to Northville to sit and enjoy the Christmas Light & Music Show & the Halloween light and music show this past year at our home on Fourth Street, which my husband, Don Edwards Jr., and I set up for everyone to enjoy.
He looked forward to meeting new people who would come up to see the show and talking with those who came year after year to see what we did new and enjoy th ...
Dangerous situation is developing
To the editor:
I am adding my voice to those who have begun to speak up about the dangerous situation developing on The Great Sacandaga Lake.
For many years I have enjoyed all types of boating on this lake. However, this is the first year I am concerned for my own safety and that of others who sail, drift, or tow a float with passengers. Boat speed and noise have become excessive. ”Rules of the Road” and courtesy are mostly ignored.
Th ...
Dangerous boating practices
on Great Sacandaga Lake
To the editor:
I live on a stretch of Great Sacandaga Lake north of the Northville bridge. This is a narrow and generally calm body of water.
Over the past few years, I as well as my neighbors and friends, have noticed a steady decline in marine patrols which are necessary to enforce safe boating practices. Fulton County DEC can be seen patrolling. This practice is also beginning to fade away.
When the weather is nice and it is a weeken ...

To the editor:
The Northville parade is scheduled for Saturday July 7, at 1 p.m. Line up is on the south end of the village. Antique cars are on First Street, floats and groups are on Second Street, just pull up after what ever is there. Please be in place by 12:30 p.m.

Don’t call me about the parade
To the editor:
I am going to politely request that people no longer call me concerning this year’s Memorial Day activities in Broadalbin. Please direct your comments and inquiries to VFW Post 8690 that sponsored the parade in 2012.
My involvement the parade was limited to honoring the request of Commander Charles Sweet in providing him with an updated list of participating groups. I did not prepare, participate or attend any of the festivities in Bro ...
Enough is still enough
To the editor:
You bet “Enough is enough already” Let’s stop badmouthing Ms. Kemper and especially Evelyn Horwood. It is none of anyone’s business why or when Ms. Horwood does or doesn’t attend meetings. This is America, I believe we can still come and go of our own free will.
I did write to “The Editor” shortly after Ms. Horwood’s letter describing her dismay at the actions of those attending that meeting. Unfortunately my ...
An open letter of thanks
To the editor:
Last week’s budget vote marked a milestone in school budget history as it became the first time that voters were asked to voice their opinions on a budget that limited the tax levy. In the Northville District, our voters saw fit to approve our proposed budget by a 62 percent majority. The BOE, administration, staff and students would like to express their deepest appreciation to our voters for these results. In addition, we would like to welcome to ...
Enough is enough, already
To the editor,
After reading the letter from Evelyn Horwood, I have to wonder if she is such an interested resident of Northampton, why was this her very first town meeting—I know she is not new to the town.
As for the attack on the supervisor, had she gone to Jack Farquhar to find out what she needed to know before she unethically went to the media, she probably would not be in the mess she is in now. It seems to me that the members of the town board are trying ...
School votes are Tuesday
To the editor:
On May 15, voters in school districts throughout New York State will have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the 2012-2013 budgets being proposed by their local school boards. Unlike people in many nations who are denied the right to express their views, citizens of the United States enjoy a democratic form of government that not only encourages but promotes citizen involvement in the decision-making process.
Voters should be aware, however, of a ...
