Mayor offers thanks for carnival
Dear Editor,
On behalf of the Village of Mayfield, I would like to thank Steve Van Allen, Carl Edwards, Lori Valk, Joan Bezio for the creative efforts and hard work in founding and running the first ever Mayfield Winter Carnival. I know they have been working very hard since November to put together all of the things the went into the carnival. They are great people of the community that should be recognized for that all that they do. I thank each of them and th ...

The update from Batchellerville
To the editor:
In September, I reported that the Hudson River-Black River Regulating District’s board was considering what action to take against an access permit holder who allegedly dumped a significant amount of fill on state land without permission and then, when caught, refused instructions to restore the land to its former state.
The following update is a reminder that the District’s rules, when ignored, can bring a harsh penalty down on an acce ...

NOTE: The following letter was sent to Gov. Cuomo. A copy was submitted for publication.
December 13, 2011
Dear Gov. Cuomo:
“For decades, taxpayers across New York state have been burdened by back-breaking property taxes that have crippled businesses and families.”
“This tax cap is a critical step toward New York’s economic recovery, and will set our state on a path to prosperity.”
Your words exactly, Gov. Cuomo.
As one of the crippled, I would like to know how ...

School districts facing hurdles
To the editor:
School boards and administrators are in the process of generating the data that will be used to create their 2012-2013 budgets. As we approach this task, we do so with the realization that not only have we been lied to, but so have our constituents. And the lies have come from the very people whom we elected to serve us, and whom we trusted to do what is best for our children, our schools and our communities.
In the Northville Central School Distri ...

Cutting the sheriff’s road patrols
To the editor:
I am writing to you in response to the recent article in the Leader Herald to express my concerns about the proposed cuts regarding the sheriff’s patrols.
Every Town in Fulton County relies on the Sheriff’s Patrols and The State Police for their police protection and any further cuts would jeopardize their safety and well being. It is a well known fact that the State Police do not have the manpower to handle the cu ...

Argotsinger a fine supervisor
To the editor:
Initially I had no compulsion to write in support of any candidate this year, but when, to my amusement, the letter-to-the-editor discourse unfolded surrounding the race for Supervisor of the Town of Mayfield, I had to take laptop in hand. I’m paraphrasing here, but when I read “business as usual cannot go on like it has in the Town of Mayfield”, I took notice.
Apparently, Supervisor Argotsinger has been irresponsible, and is all t ...

Hear both sides of an issue
To the editor:
This is in response to letters published by this newspaper regarding the Town of Mayfield supervisor. Mr. Argotsinger had some friends and family who were willing to write letters on his behalf. They would have you believe all is well with his relationships with the council people, town officials and employees. It has been reported that some of our elected officials are being left out of discussions and all are not being treated equally.

Northville Civic offers its thanks
To the editor:
I just want to give a great big thank you to all the crafters, vendors, food vendors, Boy scouts, Girl scouts, civic members and to all of you that came and helped to support the biggest and the best (so far) fall fest that Northville has seen in a long time.
The weather was perfect, the park was a beautiful setting, the friends were plentiful and the food was fabulous. A special thank you to Darryl Roosa for fixing the electric so that w ...

To the editor:
Many thanks to all who supported the September 11th Chicken Barbeque sponsored by the Mayfield Historical Society. It was very successful.
Special thanks to Kevin and Tracey Chaffee, owners of the Mayfield Grill, for allowing us the use of their facility and grounds for our event.
We used their facilities for for food preparation and refrigeration. We had good weather but if had it rained, they would have opened their banquet room for our p ...

Mayfield voters face choices
To the editor:
Primary Day is September 13. Please join me in re-electing Supervisor Rick Argotsinger and Town Clerk Dorothy Hart of the Town of Mayfield. Elections are often decided on Primary Day.
As a former Councilwoman for the Town of Mayfield and a tax payer, I am thankful that Rick and other members of our County Board of Supervisors have had the objectivity and courage to make difficult decisions for the overall good. Most people realize that governme ...

A letter to the students, families and staff of the Northville School District
To the editor:
I want to formally thank each of you for having me work for you in the capacity of your school social work counselor these last years. I have been truly blessed to know all of you and to be a part of your lives. As you all know, my health issues demand that I have health benefits. Because the Administration of NCS cut my tenured position to .4, without health benefits, I am forced to resign my position ...

Re-establishing the boundadries
Dear editor:
When the Sacandaga Valley was evacuated in the 1920’s and then flooded (which started March 27, 1930) the town of Edinburg was divided into two parts - one part on west of the so called North Shore, and the other part on the east of the so called South Shore. There were No bridges connecting the two parts. Before the flooding there were twelve (12) Common School districts in Edinburg, one of which was ‘CS School District 10’ and a s ...

Another view of the Doins brouhaha
To the editor:
As the ride vendor for the Doins for the last eight of 10 years I would like to reply to the accusations of the Civic Chambers President Mahlon Robinson.
Mahlon wasn’t even correct when he said he was the only one that new the truth behind the one on one with me because I guess he forgot I was also there. As in every other Doins the contract for 2011 was supposed to be returned signed to me by the first weekend of August when I do the Well ...

What’s going on with the Doin’s?
To the editor:
This is a question I have been answering a lot lately, at least trying to. I heard that the Civic Association was not having the rides and events in the Waterfront Park. This was January. Knowing what a disaster it was three years ago when the Northville Parade Committee did the parade and there was nothing else, I started to check into doing something in the Park.
It is now February and Tom and I both called members of the Civic to s ...

May 10, 2011
I am Pete Van Avery, representing the Batchellerville Bridge Action Committee.

The most extreme generosity shown
To the editor:
My name is Nikki Preston (Larman/Hemstreet), a 39-year mother (Alayna, Chandler, Jordan & Jared), (wife to Ralph L. Preston Jr.) who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in November 2007. A different view on the budget
To the editor:
How to reduce the tax bite to 10 percent without eliminating a single student program or service.
The Northville School Board and Superintendent would like us to believe that a 21 percent tax increase is the best they can do. Anything less and the students will suffer, educational programs will be gutted and as a community we will all be sorry for ever after. It is time to put the record straight.
First of all, keep in mind that this irresponsible a ...

How much would you like to pay?
To the editor:
There were some statements at the recent Northville School District public hearing on the 2012 budget that deserve another look. The first one I would like to address was made by the representative from BOCES. The gentleman stated that “the responsibility of school districts is to educate children; it is NOT to save money”. I found that statement to be self-serving, a half-truth and certainly not helpful in the current economic climate. ...

Once again, I would like to thank the community and everyone who has helped make yet another Knox Mansion event into a success. Progress report
from Batchellerville
To the Editor,
In mid-December, Harrison & Burrowes Bridge Constructors, the firm building the new Batchellerville Bridge, will suspend work for the winter.
Since the groundbreaking ceremony on August 3, the firm has nearly completed the west abutment (the end foundation upon which the bridge superstructure will rest). It also has begun work on seven of the new bridge’s 12 piers. The latter include piers 1-6 extending out from the west shore, plus ...

Nearly four years have passed since I last saw his smile, heard his voice, laughed with him, confided in him, listened to him, and hugged him.
You see, at the age of 24, my younger brother John took his own life. He was a shining star in his community who was a hard-working, mature, married father of two, managed a local business, and always offered a helping hand in his short 24 years here on earth.
At the time of John’s death, I didn’t ...
