SAMMONSVILLE — An Ilion motorcyclist was killed in a head-on collision on Route 67 Sunday morning that also injured two of his family members during the ride home from Lake George’s Americade rally.
According to Sammonsville Volunteer Fire Chief Stanley Allen, the unidentified 64-year-old male suffered fatal injuries when his westbound bike collided with an eastbound van at 9:12 a.m. The victim’s body ricocheted off his bike before striking into a guard rail, Allen said.
The biker was accompanied by his daughter and her husband, Allen said, and their bike was pegged beneath the van. The pair was transported to a Little Falls hospital for treatment.
“The man was just shaken up, and the woman had a severe leg injury, mostly her ankle,” Allen said. “They’ll be OK.”
Allen said the bikes hit the van head-on.
“It’s a sharp bend, and they didn’t know the area too well. They cut the turn too wide, hit the side and went right into the van,” the chief said. “You could see where the van driver tried to slam on his breaks, there were skid marks. I don’t think speed had anything to do with it. We’ve had a lot of wrecks in that spot.”
The Fulton County Ambulance Service transported the deceased to Nathan Littauer Hospital, Allen said.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the accident. More details will likely be released this morning, a release said.
Allen said the two bikes were accompanied by a car and a third motorcycle, but those individuals were not harmed. He said all of the bikers were wearing helmets and appropriate gear.
“It was an unfortunate mishap. They just wanted to get home. They said they had a horrible weekend, they were all cold and wet because of the weather,” Allen said.

Tryon teen charged
PERTH — A day after the state announced the closure of the Tryon Girls School, a second violent incident there in the past month resulted in felony charges, the New York state police announced Friday.
On Wednesday, state police in Fonda responded to a report of a stabbing at the girls detention facility. Resident Cheryl Lynn, 17, reportedly became enraged when she was told she’d have to wait to make a phone call because the phone was already in use.
According to troopers, Lynn then stabbed a male staff member on the left side of his face and on his left wrist. She was eventually subdued and removed from the area.
Lynn was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession. She was incarcerated at the Fulton County Jail in lieu of $1,000 cash bail or $5,000 bond.
On May 15, a 56-year-old female Tryon nurse was treated at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam for injuries sustained when a 15-year-old resident stabbed her in the legs and forehead with a pen.
On Tuesday, the state’s Department of Children and Family Service announced that the Tryon Girls Center will close within 60 days, following a push by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to close similar facilities across the state.
The boys’ half of the detention center was closed last January.
