SVAN announces September classes

The Sacandaga Valley Arts Network has released a listing of classes available for the month of September:
• Beginner Ceramics: Hand building Michele Drozd, Potter
Sept. 6, 8, 13, 15, 20 – From 6 to 8:30 p.m., Bellwether Studio at The Orendaga, located at 732 South Main Street, Northville.
Students will learn how to work with clay, roll slabs, create and use drape molds and form the slabs to create plates and platters of varying sizes. The class will cover stamping, decoration, slip trailing, etc. as well as historic and contemporary pottery, sketch ideas, and the bisque and glaze firing processes.
Five sessions available for three to five students. Cost: SVAN member $100. General public $105. supplies: $50.

• Create Without Fear, Art Quilts – Self Portrait with Fiber artist, Judith Plotner
Sept. 12 – 9 a.m. to noon, Sept. 14 – 9 a.m to 2 p.m., Sept. 15 9 a.m to 2 p.m. Plotner is exhibited nationally and internationally. Currently, her quilted collages are being shown at Quilt National ‘11 in Athens, Ohio, and at Parallax: Views of Contemporary Quilt Artists, in Rochester.
You will experiment and create a self-portrait or autobiographical piece using simple innovative techniques beginning with a photograph applied to fabric, to create a unique expression of your inner self.
No previous experience needed, but knowledge of sewing machine is helpful. Using the techniques taught, you will be able to continue working in this manner in your own home.

• Beginning Hand Weaving Part I with Arlene Rambush, Fiber Artist
Sept. 13, 20, 27, Oct. 4, 11, 1 to 4 p.m., Deerhaven Studio,130 North Road, Benson
Students will learn how to wind the warp and dress the loom, and will plan and complete at least two woven items. Room for two to five students.
Cost: SVAN member $150. General public $155. Loom use and supplies included.

Sept. 22, 29, Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27 – 6 to 9 p.m., Edinburg Community Center, 45 Military Road, Edinburg
The focus will be on drawing from life observations, experiences and imagination. Participants will be introduced to line, shade/value, textural mark making and spatial relationships including perspective.
Traditional materials will be used along with experimental media. Color will be introduced toward the end of the six-week class. The goal throughout will be to develop dramatic contrast in drawing. 7-12 students, beginners and those with experience.
Cost: SVAN member $60. General Public $65. A supply list will be provided prior to the class.

Attention vendors and crafters

BROADALBIN — Vendors and crafters are wanted for the Broadalbin Community Block Party to be held, rain or shine, on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 4 to 9 p.m.
This year’s party will be held at the Broadalbin-Perth High School (100 Bridge Street).
A 10 x 10 space can be rented for $30. Space is limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Chicken barbecue and open house set

NORTHVILLE – The Northville Central School PTO is hosting a fundraiser barbecue catered by Bills Dugout of Galway on NCS open house night, Thursday, Sept. 15, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the school parking lot.
Take out meals will include: chicken, salt potatoes, coleslaw, rolls and butter for $9.50 per meal.
Open House will begin at 6:30 p.m., come out and see all the new renovations at the school and meet the staff. To purchase tickets in advance please call 863-2646.

Chicken barbecue scheduled Saturday

MAYFIELD – The Mayfield Historical Society chicken barbecue, will be held this Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Mayfield Grill, School St. in Mayfield, from 4 to 7 p.m. Pre-sale dinner tickets honored, with limited extra dinners available.
Cost is $8.50 for take out dinners or eat in. If weather is fair, you can take your meal to the historic Rice Homestead located at 328 Riceville Rd., Mayfield, and enjoy it at on the historic Rice Homestead grounds. Home tours available. Drawing course is being offered

Learn the fundamentals of drawing in this six week class offered by SVAN on Thursday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 22 at the Edinburg Community Center, where your life experience and imagination will add to new drawing skills.
Drawing is a process of seeing while exploring spatial harmony and composition. Students will work with contours, value, mark making and perspective. Traditional materials such as pencil, charcoal, conte crayon, brush and ink will be used.
Toward the end of the course, experimental media will be used, introducing color. Classes will have lecture and demonstration segments with plenty of one on one attention.
A materials list will be provided upon registration. The class, recommended for ages 16 through adult, is limited to 15 participants. Class dates are Sept. 22, 29, Oct. 6, 13, 20, and 27. Golf for fun and fellowship

A Golf For Fun and Fellowship tournament, will be held this Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Sacandaga Golf Course, 126 Pine Ave., Northville, with a shotgun tee-off time at 1 p.m.
An ABCD scramble with dinner following. Sign up as a 4-person team or as an individual and be placed on a team.

Northville BOE meeting scheduled

NORTHVILLE – The Northville Central School Board of Education will hold a public discussion meeting Tuesday, Sept. 13 in the schools auditorium beginning at 6:30 p.m.
All community members are welcome and encouraged to bring fourth their questions and comments to the board.
The public discussion forum allows for various matters to be thoroughly discussed in an attempt to keep the regularly monthly meetings time frame down.
The regular monthly school board meeting will be held in the schools auditorium Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m.

New phone number for F-MCC

JOHNSTOWN — Fulton-Montgomery Community College has a new phone number; (518) 736-FMCC (3622).
“In the past month we’ve launched a new website, a new student information system (PowerCampus), and now we are pleased to launch our new phone number,” says F-MCC President Dr. Dustin Swanger.
“This new number is easily recognizable and will get you to any department on or off-campus, including our site at the Amsterdam Riverfront Center.”

Fall festival coming to Northville

NORTHVILLE – The Northville Civic will be hosting a Fall Fest event with rides, games, vendors and crafters on Friday, Oct. 7 from 2 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Currently, they are looking for new vendors, food vendors and crafters to participate in the event.
There will be other events in the village that weekend and an anticipated very large crowd is expected for all events.

SVAN artist reception Tuesday

NORTHVILLE – A SVAN Meet the Artist Pavlos Myakis Reception, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the Northville Public Library Gallery, 341 South Third St. Northville, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Sacandaga Valley Arts Network (SVAN) will host an artists reception for fiber assemblage artist Pavlos Myakis.
This is a meet the artists reception where you will have the opportunity to view artwork, meet the artist and hear what motivates him artistically.
Refreshments will be served.
Pavlos Myakis art will be on display at the library throughout September.

Vendors wanted for fall festival

MAYFIELD – The Mayfield Community Group will be hosting the annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mayfield Fireman’s Fairgrounds.
