As children enjoy the last bittersweet moments of summer vacation, teachers and district officials around the Great Sacandaga Lake are finalizing their preparations for another school year.

One of the busiest times of the year is right around the corner. As parents buy supplies and get ready to pack lunches, they should also make note of some changes that took place over the break.

Classes for students in the Broadalbin-Perth Central School District are set to begin Sept. 9. The high school will held an orientation on Tuesday.

The district will be hosting the Fulton County Stop DWI Soccer Cup over the upcoming Labor Day weekend, Saturday, and will hold a varsity football game on Friday. Open house at the high school will be held on 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27. Principal Margaret Blowers said homecoming festivities begin with School Spirit week on Sept. 27.

“I am very excited to welcome back our students and very eager to meet the new freshmen,” said Blowers. “We will be very busy with class elections and planning our homecoming festivities.”

School supply lists for the intermediate and middle schools can be found at www.bpcsd.org.

The Mayfield Central School District will be revamping its website in the coming weeks as well. The new site will feature more information, better organization and an updated look. All kindergarten through 12th-grade students are expected to report to school Sept. 8 for a half-day, with dismissal at 11:30 a.m. Prekindergarten will not begin until Thursday, Sept. 9, when all students report for their first full day.

The district asks that all parents allow for extra time on the first day in the event buses are running late while adapting to new routes. Officials recommend parents avoid calling the main office during dismissal time as staff may be assisting students.

In the Northville Central School District, the latest addition is new Elementary Principal William Crankshaw. The district’s board of education appointed Crankshaw to the position at its public meeting held Thursday. The appointment was by a 3 to 1 board vote.

Crankshaw currently serves as building principal at Glebe Street Elementary School in the Greater Johnstown School District, a position that he has held for the past four years.

Another change in the district is the morning newscast hosted by the fifth- and sixth-grade students. The broadcast will include morning news and announcements and is available through the school’s cable system as well as schooltube.com/user/sclapper. School will begin Sept. 8 for both district buildings.
