Re-establishing the boundadries

Dear editor:

When the Sacandaga Valley was evacuated in the 1920’s and then flooded (which started March 27, 1930) the town of Edinburg was divided into two parts - one part on west of the so called North Shore, and the other part on the east of the so called South Shore. There were No bridges connecting the two parts. Before the flooding there were twelve (12) Common School districts in Edinburg, one of which was ‘CS School District 10’ and a school building in the hamlet known as Anderson, operating on the southern end of Edinburg’s South Shore. Due to flooding, the operation of the Anderson school did not survive, and there was No Edinburg school operating within District 10. Parents of school age children contacted the closest school which was in the community of Fish House, and negotiated with them to educate their resident children. School had to be within, walking distance and this arrangement worked well during the emergency, but was never intended to be a ‘forever’ arrangement. It has, however, persisted.

Fish House is in Northampton, and Northampton has been consolidated with the Broadalbin-Perth School District. Thus Broadalbin-Perth has been collecting school taxes and educating the (very few) children residing in this one small subsection of Edinburg for most of the last eighty years.

Twelve of our District 10 residents attended a recent Broadalbin-Perth School Board meeting and raised the issue of that District’s legal rights to continue with this practice. We have not been contacted concerning the finding of any such legal document. We have discovered two documents from the NYS Department of Education that show that by 1987 there was NO connection between Edinburg’s subsection and Broadalbin-Perth.

As Edinburg now has a steel bridge, a fine consolidated school system with a full time Superintendent, we hope to exert pressure to have school jurisdiction of this former District 10 returned to Edinburg. We need all residents of Edinburg to support the effort in order to bring the issue to the attention of all involved offices and ultimately to the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, and the Department of Education.

Michael Kearney,

Edinburg

Rotary congrats

To the editor:

The Northville Board of Trustees would like to congratulate the Northville Rotary on another successful Woodworking and Fine Arts Show held recently in the Village.  The event attracted visitors from a wide variety of areas and in turn showcased what our Village has to offer.

Aside from raising funds to continue the local donations you have made to groups such as the food pantry at the Fulmont Community Action Agency, the Northville High School award and scholarship programs,   the Summer Youth Program, the Emergency Squad, and the Northville-Edinburg Little League; this event also brought an influx of people to our area that patronized local businesses, which in turn supports the local economy in the form of sales tax revenue.

Now, more than ever, we need quality events like this to promote tourism to the Northville area.

Mayor Groff

and the Northville Village Board of Trustees
