BROADALBIN — For the past two years, the Broadalbin-Perth boys soccer program’s Patriot Pink Out has been as much about increasing breast cancer awareness and raising funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation as it has been about the game being played on the field.
But this year’s event, scheduled for Monday, Oct. 17, at B-P’s Patriot Field, is taking on the trappings of a festival, complete with a band, vendors, raffles, and plenty of pink memorabilia—plus, double the soccer.
Both the JV and varsity teams will wear pink uniforms for their games against Gloversville on Monday. When they take the field at 5 p.m., members of the JV team will wear the pink uniforms worn by last year’s varsity team. At 7 p.m., the varsity team will take the field wearing new pink uniforms that feature the B-P soccer emblem on the right upper chest. Both teams will also wear pink cleats donated by Soccer.com
Broadalbin-Perth’s varsity team currently boasts an 8-0-3 overall record with two games to play before Monday’s Pink Out, while the JV team is 8-1-1.
Prior to the start of Monday night’s varsity game, the boys soccer program will invite all cancer survivors onto the field to be recognized. At halftime, local band The Refrigerators will perform. B-P will also recognize this year’s honorary captain, Kelly O’Brien, a junior and member of the girls soccer team at Mohonasen High School who is currently battling leukemia.
Patriot Field’s gates will open a full hour before the JV game, at 4 p.m., to allow Pink Out attendees to enter to win Avon gift baskets, obtain pink hair extensions, buy raffle tickets and shop for t-shirts, wristbands and photo magnets—with the proceeds from all sales going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The $1 admission fee will also be donated to the Foundation. Last year, Broadalbin-Perth raised more than $1,500.
The Patriot Pink Out started in 2009, when the varsity boys soccer team dedicated†its season to high school Principal Robin Blowers, who was battling breast cancer at the time. That year, the Patriots advanced to the state Class B semifinals and finished with an 18-2-2 record. Blowers’ cancer is currently in remission.
The 2011 Patriot Pink Out is sponsored by Eurosport, Avon, The Flag Makers, The Golub Corporation, Anaconda Sports, and Adirondack Beverage.
