Once reluctant, B-P's Smith is now a top thrower

By MICHAEL KELLY/For the Express

BROADALBIN -- A few years back, Anna Smith was pretty much forced onto the track and field team at Broadalbin-Perth.
"I didn't really do it because I wanted to," she says. "I did it for social reasons."
After her friends joined the B-P modified team when Smith was in seventh grade -- "They were all doing it and I was just chilling at my house," she says -- Smith went out for the team the next year.
One problem: In general, track and field requires a good deal of ...

Reid Hill and Perthshire results are in

REID HILL/PERTHSHIRE CONTEST RESULTS
Uowards of 150 youngsters participated in last Sunday's Annual Reid Hill Kid's Fishing Derby at the Perthshire on Route 30. Attendance was down a but from previous years, but that was largely due to the cooler, showery weather than developed as the event progressed.
The damp and cold weather never stopped youngsters from fishing and those that were prepared for it fared quite nicely. Young anglers that needed a break from fishing stepped indoors and enjoyed ...

On the Water, Welcome back, boater

By CAPTAIN PETER BYRON

The season is here. The water is inching up on the Great Sacandaga and boaters are anxious to launch boats, visit friends and do whatever boaters do. But, is everyone ready for the challenges and the adventure?

The View from the Shore
Athough it might not be fashionable to emphasize because of the desire to be on the water, there is a little bit of work to be done before launching.

Some of our skippers leave their boats on shore near the Great Sacandaga. These l ...

Twenty-three teams try to take on the turkeys

By RON KOLODZIEJ

TUMAN'S ONE-DAY TURKEY CONTEST
Twenty-three two-person teams were entered in the annual Tuman's Tavern, Amsterdam, one-day turkey contest held last Sunday, May 5.
The heat may have impacted the birds behavior in much the same manner as it did the fish a day earlier in the annual GSLFF Spring Contest because only three teams managed to score doubles, though several more of the teams did score with one bird anyway.
First place went to Nate Craig, Fonda, and Justin Craig, Amsterda ...

Winners announced in spring fishing contest

By RON KOLODZIEJ

GSLFF CONTEST RESULTS
Warm weather and a smooth lake greeted the 157 anglers who participated in last Saturday's annual Spring Fishing Contest sponsored and conducted by the Great Sacandaga Lake Fisheries Federation.
Fishing was a tad slower than expected but that was likely due to the cloudless skies and bright sunshine. A cloudy day and a light "walleye chop" might have been better but I didn't hear any of the anglers complaining.
George Drygula of Amsterdam took first place ...

BBAC update on HRBRRD

To the editor

April 15 is my target date for opening our summer place in Edinburg. During the bleak winter months, as one cold, grey day yields slowly to another, the thought of getting back to the beautiful shores of Great Sacandaga Lake and its endless opportunities for fun keeps me going. This spring, with daily temperatures running a little lower than average, I considered holding off for a week. But in the end, I couldn’t resist and switched on the water just one day late.
I don't kn ...

Letter-writing petitions are effective way to get message across

To the editor

To the editor:
It’s called a letter-petition, consisting of a detailed message on one sheet and the names, addresses and so forth on a second attached sheet, listing local residents who totally support the particular views being outlined.

A discount smoke screen

To the editor

Dollar General and Family Dollar now selling cigarettes: What does this mean for American families?
Low-income Americans struggle to make ends meet and provide for their families. In many cases, money is tight, they don't have access to health care services or transportation and they have limited shopping choices. It is well documented that individuals with lower incomes and education levels smoke at much higher rates than those with higher incomes and education levels. Dollar Gen ...

Open letter to the Mayfield Town Board

To the editor

Headlines on the front page of the April 11, 2013 Sacandaga Express caught my eye:  “Cat Fight: Town Board tries to stop the appeal.”
Because I went to the Salton’s last fall to see those tigers and leopards, I was interested in what the article had to say.
Why does the Town Board keep calling it a business? A business is a commercial establishment for a profit. This definitely isn’t the case with Steve Salton. He is completely and legally licensed to ...
