A giant returns to Route 30

MAYFIELD - The former Alvord’s Leather giant is now sporting a fresh coat of paint, some new feet, a new name and a new job as the mascot for Adirondack Traditions Log Homes, a Daniel Boone Log Home Dealer owned by Marty Greco of Mayfield.

The iconic local image measures in at 24 feet in height and weighs 975 pounds.

Boone was erected on State Route 30 last week after a three-year absence. The giant formerly stood in front of Alvord’s Leather, as retail store on Route 30 in Mayfield which quickly became a local landmark since its placement there in 1971.

Greco refurbished the giant’s rotted feet, took off the sideburns and glasses, cleaned him up and painted him. Greco together with Andy Luey, Dan Verkleir, and Art Yost stood the giant up near the log home sign as passers-by honked and waved. Shortly after being secured in his new home, cars were stopping by for photos. Greco sells log homes from his home on Camp Road in Mayfield, not from the iconic giant’s new spot.
