2012 chamber golf classic scheduled

GLOVERSVILLE — The Fulton County Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry in association with Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the 2012 Chamber Golf Classic on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at Fox Run Golf Club in Johnstown with shotgun start at 12:30 p.m., and Rolling Hills Country Club in Ft. Johnson with shotgun start at noon.

The Chambers would like to extend an open invitation to participate in this history making event, where Fulton and Montgomery Chambers begin integration into one regional chamber of commerce, as they join together for the first of many memorable moments to come.

The tournament will offer participants a fantastic day of golf, camaraderie, great food and refreshments, contests of skill, as well as some fun, new features. An awards reception will be held at Fox Run Golf Club offering a Happy Hour, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with entertainment, and a stations style dinner prepared by the club’s banquet Chefs, Kevin Collins and Cubby Faville. The Award’s reception will feature a Master of Ceremonies who will present awards to the top golfers of the tournament and prizes to the contest winners.

Raffle prizes which have been donated by local Chamber businesses will be given away via raffle drawings throughout the event as well. The evening will close with a dessert and coffee station.

A registration fee of $125 per person includes greens fees and cart, lunch at each course, stations style awards reception, on-course refreshments, golfer goody bag, and welcome gift, as well as other unique inclusions and experiences. Registrations for golfers are taken on a first-come, first served basis as to course selection.

Non-golfers are encouraged to attend the dinner portion of the event for a $50 reservation. Partial proceeds from this tournament will benefit the Chamber’s Scholarship Program which awards five $1,000 scholarships to Fulton County seniors each May, totaling $115,000 in scholarships since its inception in 1989.

A photo get well card from parish

NORTHVILLE - The Rev. Neil Draves Arpaia has extended an open invitation all St. Francis parishioners, visitors and area community members to gather at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 4 on the steps of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, located at 501 Bridge St., in Northville, for a group picture which can be sent to Bill Mazzoli, a parish member ailing at this time.

An Aug.11 rain date is scheduled. All are invited to join in the photo.

Aquapalooza takes on a Caribbean tone

NORTHAMPTON - The Northampton Marine will be hosting the 2012 Sea Ray Aquapalooza again this weekend off the end of their marina docks on Saturday, July 28 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Boaters are invited to drop anchor and listen to Jamaican steel drum band Robanic showcasing lead musician Aston “Robot” Ellis. Dockside munchies can be delivered by Jay’s Lakeside Restaurant. Junk-in-the-Trunk event is planned

BROADALBIN — The Broadalbin Youth Commission will hold its first annual “Junk-in-the-Trunk” event Saturday, July 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Broadalbin-Perth High School Parking Lot.

Individuals, organizations,crafters and businesses are invited to load up trunks or truck beds and set up to sell crafts, merchandise, attic treasurers, basement leftovers, or junk, etc. and enjoy a potential for hundreds of customers.

There will be a $15 charge for each parking space occupied. Spaces will be assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. Set up is between 7 to 9 a.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit Broadalbin Town Park Improvement Fund. No reservations are necessary. Historic cemetery tours planned

JOHNSTOWN — The Johnstown Historical Society will be sponsoring an after dark cemetery tour at the Colonial Cemetery on Green Street in Johnstown every Tuesday.

Tours will start at 9 p.m. at the cemetery next to the Drumm House.

A short history of the customs and costumes of the mourning period will be presented, followed by a tour of the cemetery. In all, 15 graves will be visited including that of Johnstown’s murderess Elizabeth Van Valkenburg, who was hanged in 1846. A short biography of the inhabitant of each of the visited graves will be given.

Adult admission will be $5, and $3 for children 10 to 16. Participants are asked to bring a flashlight.

Miss Fonda Fair pageant returns

FONDA — The 27th annual Miss Fonda Fair pageant will be held in August. Young ladies ages 5 to 24 who reside in Fulton or Montgomery Counties may enter the pageant to be crowned one of four titles depending on age: Miss Fonda Fair, Junior Miss, Princess or Junior Princess.

Interviews will take place Aug. 24 a rehearsal is scheduled for Aug. 27 in the afternoon with the pageant the same day at 6:30 p.m. All interviews and the pageant will be held at the Fonda-Fultonville School auditorium. Pageant event tickets are $10 and are good for one day Fonda Fair entry. All pageant contestants can also be in the fair’s annual parade. The application deadline is Aug. 15.

Stanton award winners named

The Elizabeth Cady Stanton Women’s Consortium has announced the winners of its second annual scholarship awards. The consortium honored the top female students in the Participation in Government courses in 14 high schools in Hamilton, Fulton and Montgomery Counties. The awards were given in memory of women’s rights activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

The winners were:

Amsterdam, Courtney Rosser; Broadalbin-Perth; Kathleen Monks, Canajoharie, Alicia Stetin; Fonda-Fultonville, Alexa Mancini; Fort Plain, Samantha Potter; Gloversville, Samantha Bell; Indian Lake, Alyssa Cuthbert; Johnstown, Ashley Polidore; Long Lake Central School, Ranya Hamden; Mayfield, Caitlyn Denton; Northville, Alanna Claire-Earley; Oppenheim-Ephratah, Taylor Lynch; St. Johnsville, Shelby Doyle; Wells, Emily Michienzi.

The Elizabeth Cady Stanton Women’s Consortium is composed of local women’s organizations who have joined together for the purpose of supporting women’s education, history, culture, leadership and equity.

Member organizations include: Amsterdam-Gloversville-Johnstown American Association of University Women, Elizabeth Cady Stanton Hometown Association, the Eclectic Society, Girl Scouts of Northeastern NY, Republican Women of Fulton Co., Soroptimist International, Women Democrats and Women Faculty of FMCC. Ice cream social and raffle is Friday

NORTHVILLE - The Friends of the Northville Library will be holding their annual ice cream social and raffle this Friday, July 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Northville Public Library’s lakeside gardens, located at 341 South Third St.

The social is being held on Friday instead of the usual Saturday date this summer, in order not to conflict with SVAN’s Saturday programs at the Waterfront Park.

This event has always been a great fundraiser for library support and programs. Generous donations from area merchants and businesses and the hard work of many volunteers make the event possible.

Please join in on a great evening with friends and family at the library’s lakeside gardens. Enjoy a slice of homemade cake, a scoop of ice cream and a beverage — $3 for adults and $2 for children under 12.
