On The Water by CAPTAIN PETER BYRON
The summer season is upon us and there is so much to talk about before the majority of the boaters hit the water. Let’s take a quick look at some ‘special operations’.
Towing of Persons
Towing of persons is really a very general term. The term includes water skiing, wake boarding, tubing, and parasailing. “New York State Navigation Law considers all of these activities “Towing of Persons”. New York Safe Boating)

To Float or Not to Float
Spring is in the air and boaters are anxious to be on the water. But early spring weather is not always the best for boating and boat preparation. Some of the sailing skills gained during previous seasons may still be in the sail locker. Our job is to open the locker and dust off the information for another safe season.
Cold Water

NEW BROOK TROUT RECORD
We have a new state record brook trout and it has a local connection. On May 16, Rick Beauchamp of Mayfield, caught a six-pound, 22 1/2 incher in Hamilton County's Silver Lake in the Silver Lake Wilderness.
He caught the lunker on a Lake Clear Wabbler and worm. Beauchamp's record fish eclipsed the previous record, set in 2012, by two ounces. That earlier record brookie came in at 5 pounds 14 ounces and was taken on May 5, 2012, also in Hamilton County, b ...

LEAVE THEM THERE
This is not much of a problem in this immediate area but for those of you who hike, photograph or otherwise use all our land resources for your out-of-doors adventures, you might want to take heed.
The Department of Environmental Conservation has issued its annual warning that "If you care, leave it there." This is the time of year when hikers and other woods travelers often come across whitetail deer fawns and other young critters.
The agency suggests you kee ...

May I See Your NYS Safe Boating Certificate?
The boating season on the Great Sacandaga was a little special this weekend. The weather did not cooperate to say the least until late Sunday. We have to award partial points for Sunday and Monday.
In our column last week we talked about New York State vessel registration and offered some tips on preparing to launch into the 2013 season. There is one other topic which is a little pressing if you intend to use a personal ...

REID HILL/PERTHSHIRE CONTEST RESULTS
Uowards of 150 youngsters participated in last Sunday's Annual Reid Hill Kid's Fishing Derby at the Perthshire on Route 30. Attendance was down a but from previous years, but that was largely due to the cooler, showery weather than developed as the event progressed.
The damp and cold weather never stopped youngsters from fishing and those that were prepared for it fared quite nicely. Young anglers that needed a break from fishing stepped indoors and enjoyed ...

The season is here. The water is inching up on the Great Sacandaga and boaters are anxious to launch boats, visit friends and do whatever boaters do. But, is everyone ready for the challenges and the adventure?
The View from the Shore
Athough it might not be fashionable to emphasize because of the desire to be on the water, there is a little bit of work to be done before launching.
Some of our skippers leave their boats on shore near the Great Sacandaga. These l ...

TUMAN'S ONE-DAY TURKEY CONTEST
Twenty-three two-person teams were entered in the annual Tuman's Tavern, Amsterdam, one-day turkey contest held last Sunday, May 5.
The heat may have impacted the birds behavior in much the same manner as it did the fish a day earlier in the annual GSLFF Spring Contest because only three teams managed to score doubles, though several more of the teams did score with one bird anyway.
First place went to Nate Craig, Fonda, and Justin Craig, Amsterda ...

GSLFF CONTEST RESULTS
Warm weather and a smooth lake greeted the 157 anglers who participated in last Saturday's annual Spring Fishing Contest sponsored and conducted by the Great Sacandaga Lake Fisheries Federation.
Fishing was a tad slower than expected but that was likely due to the cloudless skies and bright sunshine. A cloudy day and a light "walleye chop" might have been better but I didn't hear any of the anglers complaining.
George Drygula of Amsterdam took first place ...

According to figures released recently by the Department of Environmental Conservation, hunters harvested some 242,957 deer during the 2012 deer season, about 6 percent more than were taken the previous year.
Fulton County gave up a total of 1,031 deer last season, including 704 bucks. The Township total takes last year were as follows: Bleecker - 64 including 41 bucks; Broadalbin - 79 including 52 bucks; Ephratah - 102 including 79 bucks; Caroga - 48 with 3 ...

Some 48 youngsters participated in the Fourth Annual Youth Turkey Hunting Contest sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Sharp Spurs Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation last Saturday, April 20.
The first such event, conducted in 2010 attracted 12 participants; the second, conducted in 2011, drew 27 youngsters] and the third edition of the event conducted in 2012 drew 28 young hunters. The fact that this fourth annual edition attracted almost 50 youngsters shows that the word is out and ...

On Wednesday, April 10, another SAFE meeting was held at the Pine Tree Rifle Club in Johnstown. This gathering was promised to accommodate the many sportsmen who were unable to attend an earlier meeting held last month for a capacity crowd.
Tom King, president of the New York State Rifle & Pistol Club and an NRA Board member, along with Assemblyman Marc Butler and others, conducted the meeting and brought the 100 or so attendees up to speed on a few recent cha ...

SPRING TROUT FISHING
Fulton County is sort of "betwixt and between" when it comes to the Department of Environmental Conservations's trout stocking program. The lower elevation streams usually get trout sooner than those at higher elevations, due primarily to ice, water and snow conditions.
Spring stocking begins in waters to our south and proceeds northerly as conditions improve. In general. winter departs very reluctantly, and often very slowly, in portions of Fulton C ...

TROUT SEASON
Good heavens, it doesn't seem possible but spring officially arrived on Wednesday March 20 and the statewide trout season opens in just a few more days, on Monday, April 1.
Most local anglers will head for either Kayaderroseras Creek in Ft. Johnson or the one in Saratoga County. Does anyone know how they both got the same name? I've always wondered about that since they're separate waters in two adjacent counties. They probably got their names the same way that at ...

THINK PIKE
The statewide walleye, northern pike, tiger muskie and pickerel seasons closed last Friday, March 15, but some anglers may still have a strong urge to head back out onto the ice for perch, crappie or other panfish. My only advice is to stay off unless you're convinced the ice is perfectly safe. We've had some warmer days and in some areas the ice will soon become too porous to be safe any longer. Wait until the above statewide seasons reope ...

License fee reductions?
A few weeks ago Governor Cuomo announced the "NY Open For Fishing and Hunting" plan to streamline hunting and fishing licenses and reduce license fees to support tourism opportunities.
This may be just a form of appeasement after the foolish and unnecessary introduction of the SAFE Act but I'll pass it along for your review anyway. It's designed to reduce fees for anglers, hunters and trappers while maintaining support for the state's fish and wildlife programs. It would ...

The SAFE Act meeting at the Pine Tree Rifle Club on Monday, Feb. 18, was well attended and informative. I’d estimate that roughly 300 sportsmen were in attendance but many more actually attended but were not allowed in because the occupancy limit of the building had been reached.
The gathering was led by Assemblyman Marc Butler, Tom King of the NYS Rifle & Pistol Association, and Fulton County Sheriff Tom Lorey. Many concerns and opinions were addressed but the bottom line was a need ...

Chuck Mault took first pace honors in the northern pike division with a hefty 41 1/4 incher, followed in second place by “bear” Brandow with a 35 7/8 incher and Justin Glinski in third place with a 33 incher. Bear Brandow also took the top spot in the walleye division with a 21 1/2 ...

Assemblyman Marc Butler and NYS Rifle and Pistol Association President and NRA Board Member Tom King will host informational sessions in Fulton and Herkimer Counties on Governor Cuomo’s new gun control law called the SAFE Act which, in reality, will not make anyone any safer.

The next item on our schedule is the Fish House Fish and Game Club contest which is slated for this coming Saturday, Feb. 9, just a few days from today. The entry fee for this event is $20 for pre-entries or $25 the day of the event, and the fishing hours will be 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The super Walleye Challenge was held last Saturday, Jan. 26. It’s tough to say how many of the 1,500 registrants actually fished in the event because they were pretty well scattered throughout the lake and all of them didn’t visit the weigh station though a lot of walleyes were caught during the contest. According to the count kept at the weigh stations, 238 walleyes were brought in, with all of them released back into the lake after being registered.
For your information, here are t ...
