Section II state track and field qualifier last Friday

By ADAM SHINDER - For the Express
JOHNSTOWN -- Lindsay Therrien didn't run the best race of her life -- or her season -- in the final of the Division 2 girls 100-meter hurdles during the Section II state track and field qualifier meet Friday at Knox Field, but it was a second-place finish that still left the Fonda-Fultonville junior smiling.
Beaten to the finish line by Catskill sophomore Carly Bulich in the final, Therrien hit the wire in 16.6 seconds Friday, but since she'd already hit the sta ...

Girls Section II Group 3 Track and Field Championsh

By MICHAEL KELLY - For the Express

JOHNSTOWN -- At times, last Friday's rain at Knox Field lessened in intensity, but it never failed to continue for the duration of the girls' Section II Group 3 Track and Field Championships.
"Basically, I got drenched early on and never got dry after that," said Fonda-Fultonville's Lindsay Therrien. "I was cold and wet the whole time."
The weather did not seem to bother the performances, though, of Therrien, the Lady Braves or the Broadalbin-Perth Lady Patrio ...

To float or not to float

On the Water - By CAPTAIN PETER BYRON

To Float or Not to Float
Spring is in the air and boaters are anxious to be on the water. But early spring weather is not always the best for boating and boat preparation. Some of the sailing skills gained during previous seasons may still be in the sail locker. Our job is to open the locker and dust off the information for another safe season.

Cold Water
kippers are anxious to be on the water but may overlook the fact that though the air temperature is wa ...

Mayfield angler sets state brook trout record

By RON KOLODZIEJ

NEW BROOK TROUT RECORD
We have a new state record brook trout and it has a local connection. On May 16, Rick Beauchamp of Mayfield, caught a six-pound, 22 1/2 incher in Hamilton County's Silver Lake in the Silver Lake Wilderness.
He caught the lunker on a Lake Clear Wabbler and worm. Beauchamp's record fish eclipsed the previous record, set in 2012, by two ounces. That earlier record brookie came in at 5 pounds 14 ounces and was taken on May 5, 2012, also in Hamilton County, b ...

BBAC update on HRBRRD

To the editor

April 15 is my target date for opening our summer place in Edinburg. During the bleak winter months, as one cold, grey day yields slowly to another, the thought of getting back to the beautiful shores of Great Sacandaga Lake and its endless opportunities for fun keeps me going. This spring, with daily temperatures running a little lower than average, I considered holding off for a week. But in the end, I couldn’t resist and switched on the water just one day late.
I don't kn ...

A discount smoke screen

To the editor

Dollar General and Family Dollar now selling cigarettes: What does this mean for American families?
Low-income Americans struggle to make ends meet and provide for their families. In many cases, money is tight, they don't have access to health care services or transportation and they have limited shopping choices. It is well documented that individuals with lower incomes and education levels smoke at much higher rates than those with higher incomes and education levels. Dollar Gen ...

Open letter to the Mayfield Town Board

To the editor

Headlines on the front page of the April 11, 2013 Sacandaga Express caught my eye:  “Cat Fight: Town Board tries to stop the appeal.”
Because I went to the Salton’s last fall to see those tigers and leopards, I was interested in what the article had to say.
Why does the Town Board keep calling it a business? A business is a commercial establishment for a profit. This definitely isn’t the case with Steve Salton. He is completely and legally licensed to ...
